Diedhiou scores winning penalty to eliminate Lyon
January 7th, 2013
French giants Olympique Lyon were eliminated from the French Cup by third division SAS Epinal on penalties over the weekend, with the winning spot kick being converted by Famara Diedhiou.
The Lazz Sports’ represented player produced another great performance for the Championnat National side as they reached the 90th minute tied 3-3 with their illustrious opponents and a scoreless over-time period therefore led to penalties.
The sell-out crowd witnessed Diedhiou teasing the defence of the French Cup holders, the SAS Epinal striker forcing the Lyon goalkeeper and his defenders into three desperate goal-line saves and clearances. The forward was unlucky not to score during the game in normal time but he stepped up to the mark to score the winning penalty and send his team through.
Indeed, in the last 16 of the prestigious trophy Diedhiou and his SAS Epinal teammates will face second division FC Nantes on January 22nd or 23rd.
That will be a special occasion for Diedhiou as FC Nantes were the first French club to host him when he arrived in France early 2011, but they never finalised the signing of the player. He is currently on loan at SAS Epinal from FC Sochaux.
